When my kids were little, we had many a field trip to various local reserves, taking nature walks by marshy waters; areas holding the promise of chirping frogs and birds as the day warms. I was always a fast walker, so the kidlets followed behind me like little ducklings, as every few seconds I turned around to check on them and encourage them to keep up. Their little heads would bob up and down to match the pace of their unbalanced steps and I loved watching those sweet little head bobs.

One day, we were walking on a long dock over shallow water (with protective side barriers) and I discovered the exact cadence of my son’s walk at the time. He was about 7. His head would bob up and down, then about every tenth step it would disappear. Because he tripped. Literally about every 10th step. Bob, bob, bob…down. Bob, bob, bob…down. He never cried or complained, was never injured. In fact, we all laughed at the time, and still do to this day. He is certainly more sure-footed now, but what a cherished memory we all have together of that hilarious DOCK WALK.
