My Story

In my experience, creative process calls me, sometimes even consumes me. It ebbs and flows, speaking quietly at times, loudly at other times, occasionally demanding that I pay it attention. Each new expression of creativity takes time to grow, time to learn, time to evolve. I don’t drive the process, certainly can’t force it. It drives me and I’m ever so grateful that it does.

From a very early age I have always had some type of creative expression. As a young child I was a piano player; as I moved through teenage years I started improvising music on the piano, but never had the technical skill to actually “write” it (much to my dismay). In high school I became involved in performance arts and also wrote lyrics and poetry, as well as short stories.

There was a decade and a half of creative silence in my 20s and 30s. After becoming a mother, I found that my children re-inspired my creativity. There were murals I painted in my kids’ bedrooms to spark their imaginations and during this time, I found an interest and skill set in the making of beaded jewelry designs. This began an exciting time, during which my creative expression was something that other people loved and purchased!

This season of jewelry design lasted about a decade, during which time the kids grew up and life had many changes and surprises. Again, at some point between jewelry design and painting, there was a period of creative silence.

However, creativity can’t be stifled indefinitely, and in 2017 I felt utterly compelled to start painting, though I had never previously done so. I walked into an art store and said, “I want to start painting. Hook me up with everything I need to get started.” I’ve been in love with the process since then!

THE FUN: Many paintings will have a personal narrative noted with the painting. If you’d enjoy reading about inspiration, experiences and thoughts about each painting, I invite you to linger here and review the narrative. Some paintings really do have stories. Some inspire fewer words. Either way, you are free to take this in or move past it to order your painting. Currently, the thunderous skies of spring are my muse, so you will find many paintings in this series. There are other series as well, and sometimes just a random something I wanted to paint. My hope is that you will enjoy either/both the narrative and my paintings and take a moment to enjoy perusing Fine Art by Denie.

THE NAME: Denie is my childhood nickname. I have great fondness for it. Few people know me by that name, mostly just cousins I grew up with, my sister who actually bestowed that nickname upon me, my niece and nephew, a few random friends across the course of life. Regardless, I am Denie as much as I am my formal name. Adulthood often forces us to abandon the playfulness of our childhood, to be determined to see things inside the lines. Art and creativity bring us back to the exuberance we had for seeing things differently as a child, employing silliness, finding the unconventional to be beautiful. For this reason, I find that it is the perfect name of my business, the perfect signature, allowing me the childlike freedom to explore my creative self, filled with all the free thinking “Denie” of my childhood.

THE SIGNATURE: My signature is a big swooping “D” with the rest of the name tucked inside it. So the “enie” inside the D completes the signature, Denie.

THE PRICING: I want my pricing to be objective and fair; not a secret, not charging more for a painting I particularly love, or one that required extra hours of work, one easily calculated by every buyer. I charge $1.25 per square inch, which also includes all fees associated with proper wrapping/handling/delivery and package insurance in order to get your painting safely to you (in the Continental U.S.) You will not find any additional fees when checking out.

THE BUSINESS: Fine Art By Denie offers original canvas paintings.  Sizes will be noted on each individual description.  Most paintings are in a custom-made floating frame.  Frames are made from either oak or pine, with a natural finish, stained finished or painted finish, based on what suits the painting best. Some paintings will not be framed.  All of these specifics are noted in the descriptions. You can also select “no frame” to receive your painting ready to hang as is, or ready for you to build out a beautiful complimentary frame to your liking.

FUTURE PLANS: We will be offering prints, with size options available.  You will be able to custom order the size print you desire with a drop-down box on the order screen.  Some print sizes will be standard on our site and will already be available.  Custom ordering the size print you desire will not increase the cost, however, will probably add a week or two for delivery. We will continue working on this feature of the site to make it live and operational for your art purchasing preferences.

Thank you so much for visiting Fine Art by Denie. We’re glad you are here!
